Nellie
"How do you know Gordon?" This random chick asked.
"Know him? Who says I know him?"
"I've seen you two talking."
"Is he your man or something?"
"Everybody wants to land the star athlete don't they? If he keeps going like he's going he's going to make it all the way. If you're looking to have him or someone like him you really need to consider pledging next year. Not only will you have the network of sisterhood, but the right connections to socially provide the opportunity to meet more guys like Gordon. Think about it, you could have Gordon for a minute. Or you could have Gordon or a guy like Gordon putting a ring on that finger." Then she walked away.
When I got home Marquez called me. I asked him if he thought about pledging. He said they were trying to recruit him during pledge week, but he turned it down. He said pledging wasn't ideal for him. He said he understood why people did it and what it meant to them. However, he has always been his own person, and he planned to stay that way. I said it didn't make me unoriginal if I decided to pledge. He said he wasn't saying that, but he wasn't going to do it. I guess that's when I decided I would do it next year.
Marquez gave me his flight information for his flight this Thursday. I tried to act like I wasn't excited that he was coming but I was. For one I hadn't met anyone out here that made me even want to consider them, and "Gordon" appeared to be blocking. Clearly he doesn't remember me, and I doubt he's spoken to Ahjani. I'm waiting for it to all blow up.
When Marquez came I showed him around my campus. He met the few associates I had out here. He came with me to the football game. Gordon looked pissed off when he saw Marquez. Marquez asked me who he was. I told him Gordon was the star athlete on the basketball team. Marquez stared back at Gordon until he stopped watching us.
The rest of Marquez's visit was pleasant and we had a good time together. We made plans for my next visit home during break.
Then the next time I ran into Gordon on campus he asked who Marquez was. I told him it was none of his business. Gordon frowned at me and kind of lingered. "Do you know who I am?"
"I know exactly who you are." I said, and then I walked away.
